Hank Azaria on The Simpsons' Apu controversy: 'I'm willing to step aside'
theguardian.com
The actor, who voices the role, says he could be replaced by an Indian or south Asian actor and called for more diverse voices in the show’s writing room- Likes: 67
- Shares: 2
The funny thing is that he's one of the few smart and normal characters on the show, without any ludicrous mental deficiencies or colossal personality flaws, and in his interactions with others he's usually the sensible voice of reason. By the standards of Simpsons characters, he's actually a positive depiction. You know... compared to the problem alcoholics at Moe's, the pervert bartender, the uncaring cynical teachers at the school, the bowed principle in thrall to his overbearing mother, the over-the-top born-again Christian stereotypes next door, the ridiculous "Scottish" groundskeeper, the evil corporate businessman, the shyster doctor, the fat donut-devouring incompetent cop, the corrupt mayor and on and on... Apu is comparatively a paragon of virtue most of the time (except for that one episode where he sold dodgy food items). Is the objection that his voice is done stereotypically like Willy's and Akira's and the Sea Captain's and the Rich Texan's and Cletus's, etc etc etc...?
Retire the simpsons. It’s time.
So actors are only allowed to play their own nationality now?
Ffs just about every character is stereotyped on the Simpsons
The whole premise of the show is taking a cheeky look at exaggerated stereotypes. Flanders is the religious man, groundskeeper willie is scottish, homer is the white male at the head of a nuclear family, etc. I think these criticisms are way off the mark and ridiculous. I haven't heard these other groups carrying on about it, and they're often portrayed in a far less endearing light.
Storm in a teacup, whipped up by a moronic, failed "comedian" desperate for attention. Apu ALWAYS ends up empowered at the end of each episode.
I think Indian people gives a shit on this .. They have other things to do rather watching this cartoon

Strange isn't that those Yank Actors we think are Yanks aren't in fact yanks. But are either Brits or instead Aussies who have been trained like Gibson and others in those roles for years now. As many yanks don't have that appeal which or photogenic 'charm' that many directors see in Aussie's instead
Im sure indians dont give a shit honestly!

Loneliness linked to major life setbacks for millennials, study says
theguardian.com
Lonely millennials found to be more likely to have mental health problems and be out of work
In the sentence "Lonely millennials are more likely to have mental health problems, be out of work and feel pessimistic about their ability to succeed in life..." the word 'millennials' should be replaced by 'people'.
So people who are isolated are more likely to be depressed than people who aren’t. Thanks Sherlock.

"We will never forget." The French prime minister delivered a powerful, emotional speech at Villers-Bretonneux in honour of the Anzacs:
"Looking at the names of the 11,000 Australians who died for France and for freedom, I could not help thinking of the terrible loneliness which these thousands of young Australians must have felt as their young lives were cut short in a foreign country."
#LestWeForget ...
Read the speech in full: "We will never forget that 100 years ago a young and brave nation on the other side of the world made history by writing our history" www.theguardian.com/news/commentisfree/2018/apr/25/the-earth-is-his-only-friend-french-prime-mini...
Malcom certainly didn't deliver a Paul Keating speech, felt sorry for him, it was boring, sack his speech writers! It won't go down in history, but the French prime ministers was beautiful, well thought out, historically accurate and powerful!❤️
The French Prime Minister seems to have a better grasp on the meaning and sanctity of Anzac Day than the commentariat at the ABC. His intonements at Villers-Bretonneux pay due respect to the Australians who gave their lives for France and freedom.
"We cannot relive these stories. The mud, the rats, the lice, the gas, the shellfire, the fallen comrades, we can never truly imagine what it was like. " Such a telling statement. He did an incredible job with this speech, which has been repeatedly shown here in France. As a French citizen and an Australian citizen, I thank Édouard Philippe for delivering this speech/eulogy.
$100 million to build the war memorial in France $500 million to renovate the war memorial in Canberra Money spent on remembering the dead while living veterans are homeless and living in poverty. I want a memorial to my family members who fought in that terrible war, I want a system of trenches dug into some muddy cold barren field. I want it filled with rats, lice, fleas, mud, damp, the rusty wire, the human sewage the stench of cordite gas and death. Fill the air with the constant noise of bullets bombs and the screams of the wounded and dying. I want anyone who takes office as a politician to live in this trench for a month, eating the rations and wearing the clothes of our diggers. No champaign, no polished floors, no climate controlled environment, no slick audiovisual production. Just the reality of what happens when politicians fail to do what they are paid to do. Lest we forget.

Trump gave Macron a taste of his bizarre 'dandruff diplomacy'
theguardian.com
Standing together on a world stage, Trump took a moment to flick off ‘a little piece of dandruff’ off Macron’s shoulder. That was hardly innocent
This is the clown that said he was going to rule like Jupiter. It's fucking hilarious. Trump is the greatest shit stirrer of all time.
Daily reminder:
This is what military support in Syria gets you. Kisses on da cheek, grooming services and holding hands. :-D Wondering what Teresa May is gonna get... <3
Talking down to the boy! Scumbag!
An old man wants to let the young man know who's top dog.
"It could also be possible, of course, that Trump has zero impulse control and says and does whatever pops into his mind." You got it, that is exactly what's happening. There's no reason trying to find strategy in his actions.
Disappointed that Macron didnt get out a wet washer to try and help Trump remove all his make up and fake tan.
It would be funny if it wasn't so sad and pathetic. When is this 70+ yr old going to just grow up.
Yes it was disgusting. Even if it were true (and I doubt that) it is the height of rudeness. I have NEVER seen another President do this. Shows how crass he is.
I found the wholw thing disrespectful. He was trying to humiliate the Frenchman
Cringe worthy. 😣No diplomacy there.....surprise surpise!!
I would have ruffled Trumps hair in reply and called him an ragamuffin. He seems like a guy who would really hate to have his hair touched...
Yeah funny Donald. Real funny. I guess you'll pull out your killer fart jokes next? Maybe pretend to vomit in his wife's handbag? What a laugh from the so-called "leader of the free world".
I can see the tweet now: "Low-energy Macron, dandruff on his shoulder. Dirty French. So disrespectful. DISGUSTING!"
Poor Trump can’t see that Macron is doing anything and everything to manipulate him - and it’s clearly working. 👍
Trump had his intel boys run the ruler over Macron months ago and came up with ultimate power play, dandruff diplomacy. Great article Arwa, there is obviously nothing happening in your world right at this moment of more importance.
A leader of nothing who has no manners!
How sick is that?
You have class to sell Trump!

The rise of Russia’s neo-Nazi football hooligans
theguardian.com
The long read: For the past two decades the Russian state has encouraged groups of violent far-right fans. As the World Cup approaches, it is struggling to tame them. By Simon Parkin
Always painting Russia as an evil nation. Why can't we put down our differences and come together as one people. We have only one world and the same blood runs through our bodies. Let's love ourselves.
Neanderthals
"Stay safe.....socceroos fans", so when they come back are you going to talk to some fans about seeing so called nazi's in russia or will we get RT to do it. Instead of reporting on phantoms how about report actual holligans like I don't know the incident between Roma and Liverpool boofheads, heard lives were threatened. Oh yeah it's actually against the law for people to parade nazi memorabilia in russia so good luck looking for that stuff.
Be careful... I care very much about this!

Kevin Sheedy: Anzac Day Game Shouldn't Change Teams
triplem.com.au
"I don't think it should change, in answer to your question," he told Triple M before the game.
Have you not looked at the MCG?? It's packed. Says it all. Keep it as it is. - I'm a Carlton supporter from Adelaide, I don't have a problem with it staying as tradition.
needs to be a grandfinal rematch its about time a non victorian side had a chance to play in special occasion games seeing how its always victorian sides after all this is the AFL not the VFL
It should be the re match of the team of the year before grand finalists
Give all friday night matches back to north then
Yes. No one else wanted it when it was first conceived by Sheedy until they all saw the dollar signs so keep your hands off it. Us & bombers Anzac forever.
For ever! Think a grand final rematch game might be good to...
When the idea was first touted by sheedy it was fine to stay with the two teams. But the AFL has turned it into a massive blockbuster which generates a lot of money. It’s no longer played to the philosophy that it once was. make no mistake for the AFL it’s about money; from the tv deal and crowd numbers. So why shouldn’t the other clubs have a go?
Yes just like port and Norwood used to do
Should be the teams that played in the grand finals its the afl not vfl sick of the vics thinking they own it 😠😠😠
Crows man here.. must stay as it is
Why not do 2 games on Anzac Day, same game as normal and the another at night
Grand final rematch. Every team should experience the Anzac day Game and all the hype that goes with it
Who says it has to be only 1 game on Anzac Day
Should be a repeat of the G/F
Whoever plays,it shouldn't be every game ,6 days before actual Anzac Day,what a farce AfFL cashing in on our Hero's
I think they pretty much own it at this point.
On a public holiday the last thing I need is my team playing. Let em have it. Hope it kills em Sunday
yes it should
Who cares. I don't like either team.
Leave it alone!!! Its tradition. 2015 was farcical when they played Port and Hawthorn too.
Port fan Happy for these 2 or GF rematch Get others in on anzac eve ... share that around
VFL that’s why
He was not saying that when he was at GWS

AFL Hands Down Extra Suspension For Sam Powell-Pepper
triplem.com.au
Sam Powell-Pepper will miss more footy after the AFL released their findings from the investigation.
I don't understand why the Victorian AFL has interfered with this ,Port Adelaide was on top of this incident and has handled it well whenever have they got involved with Vic based teams
Absolute rubbish from the Afl.. Again thinking they are God
If getting intoxicated and cracking onto girls is an AFL imposed three game suspension then there's going to be a lot of players missing three games.
Dustin martin escaped with a fine for threatening someone with chopsticks? Both offences were not acted upon by the police yet Powell pepper gets three what a joke
Correct me if I'm wrong when the news broke did port power not refer it to the AFL whilst the leadership group imposed a one game ban . Now if they were winning games they'd run with the AFL's actions . However after a couple of bad games Koch is running around putting the AFL "on notice" . Ironic after being happy with it overseen by the afl originally but some bad form and the afl is stitching them up . Hilarious port power hilarious!
I wonder how much the young lady was paid by the afl in hush money
Precedent set now the VFL has to apply it to every player. Oops I mean AFL Freudian slip !!
I think these port supporters dont know what having employment means. These players get paid heaps for what just playing footy, if there are rules u must abide by than suffer the consequences if u dont, being drunk in a public place u can b charged with that alone. Let alone harassing a female while being plastered. Lucky for spp his mate helped him stop what he was doing.
The courts should be dealing with this, if I do something wrong I don't get a lighter sentence from my employer I have to face the music! Just because they play footy don't mean anything lock him up!!!
Should’ve been rubbed out for the season Deserves everything he gets 👍
Absolute rubbish, especially when players elbowing others off the ball and get a fine, AFL completely lost the plot, worry about the game like the should.
The AFL is corrupt!!! Ripp off merchants. Bet it would be a different story if it was a Geelong or Collingwoid player.
So port go through the video footage for 7 hours, find no hint of wrong doing except for drinking too much and acting like an idiot. The AFL integrity unit get involved and without speaking to the player they manage to miraculously find other evidence n gets suspended for 3 weeks. I smell something rotten
Colby 😭 they’re really hating on our boys lately! Let’s all forget about the Geelong prick who had one of ours by the head....and big surprise, got away with it...
right i'm a crows supporter now[1] he was out tooo late after a game [2] port power handled it in house as it should [3] why does the AFL seem to think that after no circumstantial evidence of the said offence happened they see fit to impose harder penalties on SPP [4] now did the girl involved in said incident report it to police or is she after 10 min of fame and imfamy. a strong word to the wise in AFL house tread very carefully as this can come back to do further damage to a young star and the AFL in general .
The AFL have now painted a big target on every player who has a few drinks, all it will take is a person filming them and drumming up a false claim and we will have a flood of this bs. Oh and now does the Brownlow become a dry zone to avoid problems. No more mad Monday, no drinking around club rooms.
What a massive over reaction.
Pathetic what for. Really disappointed with our club for not defending the player, yes he behaved like a peanut he served his suspension but 3 weeks what for. Very disappointed Port Adelaide say something don't go quite and let the AFL punish the man further because of a allegation that was crap and now the AFL want to justify why they took so long .
Did the Richmond player that shared pics of a girls boobs get a three game suspension by the afl
Hope Sturt gives him a taste of what he's going to get in the AFL
So no charges laid by SAPOL which means he did nothing wrong. And yet the AFL, Almightier than All, say he must be punished. Stick to business AFL, not moral judgements when no foul was even committed!
And no charges have been laid what Wright does the afl have to do this
Crucified for being young and making a mistake another joke by the afl
The AFL is run by a bunch girls

'Guilty' recreates the final hours of Myuran Sukumaran, a convicted drug smuggler who became an accomplished artist during his ten years in an Indonesian prison. He was executed by a firing squads on 29 April 2015. ...

This deeply moving film raises questions about the death penalty
tvtonight.com.au
ABC screens a doco which profiles Myuran Sukumaran, one of the Bali Nine, who painted multiple self-portraits whilst awaiting his fate.
What a horrific day that was... we cried at the senseless loss of life, for their families, and for the part the Australian gov played in this.
His death shattered me...senseless and proved nothing 😢
He actively recruited others to help in his get rich quick scheme and had no thought for the consequences of his actions on them or the potential victims of the Heroin he was wanting to bring into Australia, he knew the risk he was taking and didn't care until he was caught.
Notice after execution on chan and friend no more executions!!! They did not like the christian influence!! End of story!! Bang bang!!!
Possibly too sad for me to watch
Does it raise questions about the morality of drug smuggling?
It is judicial murder
I still feel soooo sad about this. There is no need for the death penalty and before anyone starts abusing I fully stand by Its too brutal and the ones who do the killing are so compromised as people. There is a better way and it was so lost in Indonesia. I am sad after seeing this. Brutal , meaningless and senseless. 😥
A horrendous loss of an absolutely beautiful person who made a terrible mistake when young and was reformed and had so much to offer. A warm beautiful person with family, friends and many supporters. No one has the right to take a life. So incredibly sad.
absolute disgrace to murder two reformed people because they were about to do something. They would never have been caught (before they had a chance to commit a crime) if it was not for the interference of the AFP - their behaviour was unforgivable and they have blood on their hands. I cannot get over this horrifying event and that we had the chance to save lives and did not. Unfortunately this is consistent with our attitude to anyone who is 'other' and has been so, since colonisation.
ABC did a non-job on promoting this doco. Caught the end of it and all I could think of was the AFP role in this senseless killing. The Bali 9 have paid an awful price for what was little more than youthful naivety.
I found this sole shattering. Would never go to Bali and support a country that condones such practices. Sad, tragic destruction of a life
It's not just about a barbaric practice - the death penalty - but the fact that the Australian Police were aware of the drug movements and the drugs were coming INTO Australia, so should have been dealt with according to Australian law. By dealing with the Indonesian authorities, Australian law officers were knowingly complicit in their deaths and have blood on their hands. And let's get real if people didn't buy and consume drugs, there would not be a market for them. We all make mistakes at some point in our life.
I suppose that goes for ISIS fighters, and terrorists who are happy to burn babies alive. The death penalty being too harsh a penalty for them so what does Amnesty suggest..yell at them...counselling..community service ???
Yes, what is the point when there’s genuine remorse and it’s clear that someone has used their time to make a real difference.
